Pain in the shoulder joint gives a person a lot of inconvenience, because because of it it becomes impossible to perform simple self-service actions: combing, getting or putting something in the back pocket, pulling the mug out of the closet, getting dressed. And postponing a visit to a doctor, you can lead to the fact that the restriction of movements will become chronic.
Only a doctor can determine which structure of the shoulder joint has suffered and what treatment is better to be prescribed. And in many cases with pain in the shoulder is diagnosed with tendonitis, which is due to the peculiarities of the structure of this mobile joint of bones.

Treatment of tendon inflammation
A tendonitis therapy can be selected by an orthopedist, surgeon, traumatologist. Therapeutic measures are aimed at eliminating the main symptoms: pain syndrome and movement restriction.
Please note! The pain leads to a permanent impairment of mobility, which as a result is difficult or impossible to restore in full. Therefore it is impossible to suffer and at the first symptoms it is necessary to address to the doctor.
The earlier the treatment procedures are started, the easier their spectrum and the higher the probability of rapid restoration of the tendon. The duration of therapy is affected by the degree of restriction of motor activity and pain syndrome.
Non-drug treatment
Immediately after trauma it is recommended to apply cold, in the future the doctor can prescribe thermal procedures.
At any stage, it is necessary to reduce the load on the shoulder joint for 2-3 weeks, but complete and prolonged immobilization is contraindicated, since it can lead to the development of adhesive arthritis.
In non-drug treatment of tendonitis, a special role is played by physiotherapy, which should be performed under the supervision of a physiotherapist. Special exercises allow you to quickly restore full mobility of the joint and prevent a decrease in the amplitude of motion.
Please note! Home exercise therapy is permissible after a detailed briefing with a specialist, but usually they are less effective. It is dangerous to choose exercises independently.
Doctors note the effectiveness of physiotherapy methods that contribute to anesthesia, inflammation and even destruction of calcifications if it is a calcifying tendinitis.
Table. The most common treatments and their effects
A type of physiotherapy treatment | Description |
---|---|
Is the irradiation of a patient site with laser light of low intensity. Accelerates regeneration of tendon fiber ruptures. | |
Represents the effect of low-frequency magnetic waves on the affected area. Similar to the laser effect. | |
Improves blood flow and nutrition of the damaged area. | |
Ultrasound produces small fluctuations in the affected area. Removes edema and prevents the formation of nodules and calcium deposits. | |
The most effective and widespread procedure in the treatment of tendonitis. The therapeutic effect is achieved by irradiating the inflamed area with sound waves of a certain frequency, creating a massage effect. It improves microcirculation and helps in eliminating calcifications. | |
Increases the penetration rate of the drug to the site of inflammation and increases the effectiveness of drug therapy. | |
Provide thermal and compressive action. Remove inflammation, swelling, pain, improve blood circulation and tissue trophism. |
During the passage of an acute period, massage sessions are recommended that relieve the load on the tendon due to a relaxing effect on the muscle, and also improve blood circulation in inflamed tissues. But such treatment is contraindicated in the infectious nature of tendinitis.
Together with the regime of motor activity, physiotherapy and exercise therapy, various medications are prescribed for all stages of the disease.
Medication
Medications in tendonitis are prescribed primarily to relieve inflammation and pain. It can be both local means, and system.
- Systemic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which include, for example, "Nyz", "Ketorol", "Diclofenac", are used more often in the form of tablets and while eating. Therapy with systemic NSAIDs is prescribed until the pain disappears, but its duration does not exceed 1-2 weeks, is contraindicated in case of gastric ulcer.
- Locally prescribe ointments or gels containing NSAIDs. They are used about 3 times a day.
- In the chronic form of the disease, irritating ointments containing, for example, capsaicin are effective.
- In the second stage, injections are given to the joint of local long-acting analgesics, for example, lidocaine.
- In rare cases, resort to a steroid blockade, which is carried out every 2-3 weeks. Local administration of glucocorticosteroids may reduce the elasticity of the tendons. With tendinitis, the biceps muscles do not do this therapy.
- Antibiotics are used when a tendonitis is caused by a bacterial infection.
Surgery for tendon inflammation
Surgical intervention is used in extreme cases:
- in the third stage to cut off part of the acromion( one of the areas of the scapula);
- with ineffectiveness of conservative treatment for the removal of adhesions, nodes and restoration of the joint structure.
Less arthroscopic option is arthroscopy. This method involves inserting thin instruments into the joint through small holes.
The recovery period after an intervention in the joint lasts up to 3 months and must necessarily include exercise therapy.
Traditional medicine help
As a complementary component to the treatment of tendon inflammation, folk methods can be used. Basically it's compresses with different components.
- Onion and potato compress is prepared from grated potatoes, finely chopped onion and clay. This composition is applied to the affected area and left overnight.
- Up to two times a day, a bandage soaked in a mixture of 500 ml of apple cider vinegar and 100 ml of vodka can be applied for several minutes to a sore spot.
- The fabric impregnated with saline is packaged in a bag and put in a freezer. Then the resulting compress is separated from the cellophane, applied to a sore spot and left to dry the tissue.
- As in the previous recipe, you can do with a gauze napkin, soaked in a tincture of a shepherd's bag.
Please Note! People's prescriptions can be used only after consultation with the doctor, because exposure to high temperatures, as well as the presence of certain ingredients, can harm, especially with the infectious process associated arthritis, gout.
Timely contact with a doctor and adherence to all the recommendations will help in a short time to get rid of unpleasant symptoms and completely restore the motor activity. The doctor will consult about when you can go back to the previous workload, how to avoid the recurrence of the disease.
Prevention of tendonitis of the shoulder
To avoid inflammation accompanied by pain, several rules must be observed:
- regularly and reasonably engage in physical training to strengthen the muscles and their ligaments;
- if possible, avoid monotonous load on the shoulder, if this is not possible, then timely give a good rest;
- before work to do the workout;
- increase the intensity of exercise gradually, no more than 10%;
- at the first manifestations of pain completely remove the load.
Prevention of the development of the disease and complications is the timely access to a doctor and adherence to recommendations.
