First aid for nosebleedsNasal bleeding causes the affected person, first of all, to feel confusion and shock, and only then he begins to think in a panic how to act in such a situation.

However, often all these actions run counter to the generally accepted medical point of view.

So what should you do in this position?

Let's deal with this issue.

Nosebleeds can begin:

  • after nose injuries;
  • with some common diseases (heart defects, liver and kidney disease, anemia, hemophilia, atherosclerosis, hypertension).

Anterior bleeding is most common, with blood flowing directly from the nostril.

A more dangerous option is posterior bleeding, characterized by the fact that blood flowing down the wall of the pharynx first enters the mouth and then into the esophagus.

Most nosebleeds go away on their own without a doctor's intervention. However, first aid for nosebleeds should be provided in any case.

What should be your actions in such a situation?

First aid for nosebleeds

1. First of all, pinch your nose with your fingers and breathe only through your mouth. This will help you pass the bleeding vessel. At the same time, the head should be tilted slightly

2. If you have ice on hand, be sure to use it. Place it in a plastic bag or heating pad and attach it to the bridge of your nose. Instead of ice, you can use any cold metal object or a cloth soaked in water.

3. If the bleeding does not stop, the nasal passage should be closed (tamped). The best option in this situation would be to use a pharmacy hemostatic sponge. If it is absent, you can use a gauze swab.

4. Before insertion into the nasal cavity, a gauze swab should be moistened with a solution of hydrogen peroxide (3%) and squeezed slightly. The tampon can be secured with a piece of bandage, which should also be inserted into the bleeding nostril. A small tip of the bandage should be left outside (about 2 centimeters).

5. If this also did not help stop the bleeding from the nose, then you should definitely take any hemostatic drug (dicino, vicasol). After that, immediately contact an otolaryngologist. If the bleeding happened at night, it is necessary to urgently call an ambulance.

6. After the nosebleeds have stopped, wait a while (about six hours) and gently remove the swab from the nasal cavity. Be careful not to damage the blood clot in your nose.

Advice:

For easier removal, moisten the tip of the bandage in your nose with hydrogen peroxide solution or plain water.

To stop bleeding more quickly, drugs are used to increase blood clotting and strengthen the walls of blood vessels.

These drugs include:

  • calcium gluconate;
  • calcium chloride;
  • ascorutin;
  • routine.

Emergency care for nosebleeds has a number of contraindications.

For example, if bleeding has opened, you cannot:

  • tampon the nasal cavity with cotton (it will then be extremely difficult to remove it);
  • throw your head back (blood will flow into the mouth);
  • blow your nose (you can break the formed blood clot).

Use these helpful guidelines as needed.

Be healthy!
