Pharmacological properties
The antibiotic has antibacterial and bacteriostatic effects. It helps to suppress protein synthesis in the microbial cell, which provokes the destruction of the transport link of the RNA of the ribosomal membrane.
Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
It is an antibiotic with a wide range of effects and is in the tetracycline group. Affects bacteriostatically, inhibiting protein synthesis in microbial cells. It is active against most gram-negative and gram-positive microorganisms.
Some pathogens may develop resistance to doxycycline, as well as to other substances from the tetracycline group.
Antibiotic pharmacokinetics:
Processes | Peculiarities |
Absorption | Absorption is increased and accelerated, while food consumption has practically no effect on this process. The maximum volume of doxycycline in the blood will be after 120 minutes. from the moment of consumption 200 mg. After a day, the indicator of the active ingredient will decrease to 1.5 μg / ml. With the consumption of 200 mg in the first 24 hours and 100 mg on the next day, the indicator will reach 1.5-3 μg / ml. |
Accommodation | After 45 minutes. from the moment the pill is drunk, the active ingredient will be found in the prostate gland, furrows gums, lungs, frontal sinuses, spleen, bile, kidneys, eye tissues, teeth with bones and liver. If the latter functions well, the concentration of the compound in the bile will be higher, in contrast to the blood. Doxycycline is able to be absorbed through the barrier of the placenta, while a small amount is found in breast milk. |
Metabolism | A small amount of the active ingredient is subjected to this process. |
Withdrawal | With a single consumption, excretion will occur within 18 hours. With repeated doses, the process will take 23 hours. 40% of the drug is excreted by the kidneys, 40% through the intestines. |
If patients have a malfunction of the kidneys, the half-life of the composition will not change, since its excretion through the intestines increases.
Peritoneal dialysis with hemodialysis will not affect the concentration of the active ingredient in the blood plasma.

In 60 minutes before the procedure, you need to consume 100 mg. After medical intervention, 200 mg should be drunk.
Severe gonococcal infection
For adults, the total daily volume should reach 300 mg or 600 mg for 5 days.
For children over 8 years old with a weight of 50 kg or more, 200 mg is enough. Children from 8 to 12 years old weighing less than 50 kg need to take 4 mg / kg every day.
Renal or hepatic impairment
It is necessary to lower the daily dosage of doxycycline, because it is gradually accumulating in the body.
Side effects
Unidox Solutab is capable of provoking the development of side effects.
When taking an antibiotic, the following symptoms may appear:
- asthma with dermatitis, generalized exanthema, anaphylactic reactions, erythema, pericarditis, rash, angioedema, urticaria and exacerbation of systemic lupus erythematosus;
- hematuria;
- lymphopenia with leukopenia, leukocytosis, blood clotting failure, toxic granulocyte granulocyte, decreased prothrombin activity, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia and hemolytic anemia;
- candidiasis may develop;
- the nail may separate from the nail bed or the nail plate will change color;
- acute renal failure with anuria, nephrotic lesion, as well as an increase in the urea nitrogen balance, which is caused by the anti-anabolic effect of the agent;
- pancreatitis, as well as liver damage, if a patient with hepatic or renal failure takes the medicine for a long time;
- with prolonged use, thyroid tissue may turn dark brown;
- pseudomembranous colitis with enterocolitis, nausea, dysphagia, vomiting, diarrhea and anorexia;
- fear with anxiety, arthralgia, myalgia, tachycardia, instability and dizziness, myopia, puffiness of the optic nerve, pain in the head, vomiting and anorexia;
- children may experience a failure in the normal formation of teeth, and osteogenesis slows down.
Overdose
Unidox Solutab should be taken according to the instructions that are displayed on the package with the tablets. Otherwise, overdose may occur.
With excessive consumption of the antibiotic, the liver is damaged, and the accompanying symptoms also occur:
- azotemia;
- high concentration of transaminase;
- hematoma;
- jaundice;
- melena;
- periodic increase in body temperature;
- vomit;
- increase in prothrombin time.
In case of an overdose, irritation and expression of the esophagus are possible, which are complemented by pain behind the sternum, esophagitis and dysphagia. This is because the tablets can stick to the walls of the esophagus. To prevent such a situation, it is necessary to take up to 200 ml of liquid for adults and 125 ml for children.
In order not to provoke further irritation of the esophagus, it is undesirable to independently induce a gag reflex. To reduce absorption, it is allowed to take activated charcoal with a laxative. Hemodialysis will not affect the withdrawal of the active component of the antibiotic.
The treatment course should be symptomatic with constant monitoring of the water and electrolyte balance.
special instructions
With long-term use of the product, it is sometimes necessary to examine laboratory tests of the kidneys, liver and blood.
Since photodermatitis may appear, it is required to limit insolation during the treatment course, as well as for 5 days after the end of therapy.
The consumption of antibiotics can provoke a high growth of insensitive organisms. In this case, you will need to refuse to take the drug by proceeding with corrective therapy.
To avoid dyspeptic symptoms, it is advisable to use the remedy when eating.
To prevent the formation of an esophageal ulcer or esophagitis, tablets must be taken with a large volume of liquid. However, they cannot be taken immediately before bedtime.
Since side effects such as dizziness can occur when taking the pills, it is required adhere to precautions when working with moving machinery and when operating by road.
Drug interactions
The absorption of the active ingredient can decrease when biologically inactive chelate complexes with metal ions appear. The latter are present in the salts of bismuth, iron and antacids. The antibiotic should not be taken immediately with antacids, which contain magnesium with calcium or aluminum, as well as with iron or bismuth. Ion exchange formulations with activated carbon provoke a decrease in the absorption of doxycycline. Therefore, such drugs are required to be used 3 hours after taking Unidox Solutab.
Quinapril helps to reduce the absorption of the active ingredient due to the increased volume of magnesium in Quinapril tablets.
Drugs that increase the acidity of the stomach have a detrimental effect on the absorption of tetracyclines, which dissolve better in an acidic than an alkaline medium.
Doxycycline is able to increase the time of clot development after the penetration of tissue factor into the plasma. At the same time, it contributes to the appearance of anticoagulants in combined treatment. In this regard, it is necessary to reduce the dosage of the anticoagulant.
It is undesirable to use Unidox Solutab simultaneously with beta-lactam antibiotics, since the first drug has a detrimental effect on penicillin.
When alcohol is consumed, the metabolism of the active substance in the liver is accelerated, therefore the half-life stage is reduced.
There are deaths due to the appearance of renal toxicity while taking methoxyflurane with tetracyclines.
The active component of the antibiotic increases the plasma cyclosporine level. Therefore, it is required to carry out regular research with simultaneous use.
The active ingredient of the drug increases the hypoglycemic effect of sulfonylurea derivatives. In this regard, with the simultaneous use of drugs, it is necessary to control the concentration of sugar in the blood. The sulfonylurea dosage can be reduced as needed.
If doxycycline is used initially, during or after retinoid treatment, reversible intracranial hypertension may occur. This occurs with the mutual enhancement of the effect of the compositions. In this regard, co-administration of retinoids with doxycycline is undesirable.
Tetracyclines can affect urinary glucose concentrations. As a result, this is reflected in the results of laboratory examinations: there may be a false increase in the level of catecholamines in the urine, due to the effect on the results of the test with fluorescein.
