Pharmacological properties
The preparation contains the active substance sodium sulfacetamide monohydrate. It is bacteriostatic and antimicrobial. Sulfacil - a derivative of para-aminobenzenesulfonic acid, inhibits dihydropteroate synthetase, reduces the synthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid.
The active substance acts against:
- gram-negative and gram-positive cocci;
- shigella;
- e. Coli (produces shigatoxin);
- cholera vibrio;
- bacillus anthracis (causes anthrax);
- clostridium perfringens;
- Löffler's bacillus (diphtheria bacillus);
- chlamydia;
- plague stick;
- toxoplasma.
Sulfacyl sodium eye drops have a bacteriostatic effect. According to pharmacokinetics, the agent predominantly acts locally on the tissues of the eye and only partially penetrates the systemic circulation through the inflamed conjunctiva.
Local application allows sulfonamides to concentrate as much as possible for about 30 minutes in the area:
- cornea;
- the anterior chamber in moisture;
- iris.
A single application per day is not enough for a permanent therapeutic effect, but it will be sufficient for sensitization during subsequent instillation. Part of Sulfacyl sodium remains in the tissues of the eyeball for 3-4 hours. The penetration of sulfonamides can increase significantly if the cornea is damaged.
Sulfacetamide metabolism occurs in the liver, and the metabolites themselves are distinguished by antibacterial activity. The excretion of this substance is achieved by glomerular filtration in the kidneys.
Release form, composition, price
Sodium sulfacetamide itself is a white crystalline powder, bitter in taste and odorless. The product does not dissolve in chloroform, ether, acetone and ethanol, but it is readily soluble in water.
Aqueous solutions contain sodium metabisulfate stabilizers. The drug is sterilized before dispensing for at least half an hour at a temperature of 100 degrees.
After the product is poured into bottles with a capacity:
- 1.5ml;
- 2 ml;
- 5 ml;
- 10 ml.
A cardboard box and paper instructions are printed for each bottle. Also, the manufacturer produces packages of 50 containers with the same number of instructions.
The bottles are made of neutral glass. They are hermetically sealed with rubber stoppers and covers. There are packages containing 2 bottles of 1.5 and 2 ml. Sulfacyl sodium (eye drops), the price of which depends on the volume of the bottle, logistics costs and the pricing policy of pharmacies, is produced by the following companies.

Indications for use
Sulfacyl sodium - eye drops, the price of which is not high, is widely used in ophthalmic practice.
This is indicated by the list of diseases according to ICD-10 codes:
- H16.0 - corneal ulcer;
- H13.1 - acute conjunctivitis in diseases classified elsewhere;
- H10.0 - conjunctivitis (both acute and chronic);
- H01.0 - blepharitis;
- A74.0 - chlamydial conjunctivitis;
- A54.3 - gonococcal eye infection.
Also, ophthalmological practice shows that with the help of these drops diseases from the specified list are quickly eliminated. In addition, they contribute to accelerated healing of the cornea and slow down purulent processes.
In addition to the name Sulfacyl sodium, pharmaceutical manufacturers also use Sulfacil Sodium-DIA. In terms of composition, principle of action and indications for use, these drugs are no different. That is, the whole difference lies precisely in the manufacturer.
Contraindications
When to use drops are contraindicated:
- Individual sensitivity may appear to sulfonamide derivatives, including to sulfacetamide.
- The drug should not be instilled in children under 2 months of age.
- The experience of treatment during pregnancy is insufficient. The same is for mothers who are breastfeeding. It has been established that drugs of the sulfanilamide series are able to penetrate into breast milk.
- Adverse reactions to sulfacetamide can be expected in those patients for whom an exacerbating sensitivity to furosemide or to other thiazide loop diuretics has been established. Previous sensitivity to sulfonylurea derivatives or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors should cause similar concerns.
Special instructions describing situations in which contraindications may appear:
- At the first sign of an allergic reaction, the drug should be discontinued immediately before consulting a doctor.
- If the amount of purulent discharge is large, the presence of para-aminobenzoic acid, which is used by microorganisms, can lead to a decrease in the effectiveness of sulfonamides.
- Not all microorganisms are sensitive to sulfa drugs. Some of them may continue to grow and intensify despite treatment. Signs of this may be an increase in the amount of purulent discharge and increased pain. In this case, drug treatment must also be discontinued.
- If you experience blurred vision, do not drive a car or perform actions that which require concentration or, conversely, speed of reaction, until complete recovery performance.
Side effects
Sulfacil sodium - eye drops, the price of which is not a priority over side effects such as:
- increased lacrimation;
- itching, stinging, or burning in the eyes;
- feeling of "fog";
- allergic manifestations, including those with severe toxic reactions such as the Stevens-Johnson toxic-allergic reaction or Lyell's disease;
- the development of other pronounced toxic manifestations with damage to the liver, or blood and hematopoietic organs;
- development of superinfection, including due to imbalance in the environment of competing microorganisms.
In case of manifestation of one or more of the listed effects, it is necessary to inform the doctor about it, especially if their manifestations gradually increase. The same - if any other symptoms are noticed that did not appear earlier in this patient.
Instructions for use for adults
The versatility of the drug lies in the fact that it dissolves well in water. It is used for injections and drops.
According to the manufacturer's recommendations, the treatment regimen and dosage depends on the disease:
- Conjunctivitis. On the first day, a couple of drops are instilled hourly into each conjunctival sac, on the following days - 5-6 times a day.
- Purulent ulcer. The therapy regimen is five or six instillations per day for a week.
- Blepharitis Treatment consists of instillation 6-8 times a day. The number of daily instillations decreases as the eye health improves. The main period of therapy is 3-5 days.
- Chlamydialor gonorrheal eye pathologies. Sulfacylum-natrium drops are used only as part of complex therapy, the period of which can be one and a half months. The patient applies 1-2 drops daily 5-6 times a day. The number of instillations decreases every week as the positive dynamics increase.
It is worth remembering that the course of treatment is prescribed individually by a doctor. Depending on the disease, he determines the required concentration of the solution (10%, 20% or 30%), dosage and the ability to combine with other means.
Rules for the use of Sulfacylum-natrium:
- with clean hands, remove suppuration and dirt from the corners of the eyes and the ciliary area;
- wash your hands thoroughly before opening the bottle;
- open the bottle;
- throw your head back;
- form a conjunctival sac by pulling the lower eyelid;
- drip eyes without touching the mucous membrane with the end of the bottle;
- do not blink for a few seconds;
- then blink slightly a couple of times to evenly distribute the product throughout the body;
- for thorough absorption of drops, lightly press with your fingers on the outer corners of the eye;
- close the bottle tightly.
Sulfacyl sodium is recommended to be instilled into both eyes, even if there is no lesion in one of them. You should not skimp on these eye drops, their price avoids the risk of contamination of a healthy eye. In addition, if this rule is neglected, there is a risk of the need to prolong the course of therapy.
During pregnancy
It is advisable to use sulfacyl sodium for pregnant women only if the expected effect of its use is significantly higher than the possible risks. This is due to the lack of data on its use during a particular trimester and lactation.
Sulfonylamides tend to penetrate the placenta and breast milk, which provokes the onset of nuclear jaundice in a newborn. Such situations arose during the treatment with Sulfacil in tablet form, and it is possible that they will happen when the eyes are buried.
That is why the printed manual for the preparation does not contain instructions for use for pregnant women. If the doctor allows the use of drops, then in accordance with the recommendations for an ordinary adult patient. The main thing is to strictly observe dosages and precautions.
For newborns
For newborns, a 10% solution of Sulfacil-sodium is prescribed. This concentration allows you to obtain a therapeutic effect with minimal discomfort.
Multiple clinical trials of the drug show that it can be used for babies:
- In case of infection of the eyes with pathogenic microflora during the passage of the birth canal. After delivery, the newborn is injected 1 drop into both eyes.
- For the prevention of blennorrhea and acute purulent inflammation arising from gonococci. Then instillation is 2 drops in both eyes immediately from birth and after 2 hours.
- With a runny nose. Bacterial rhinitis is eliminated by this drug faster and safer than antibiotics that cause allergies. Before instillation, the nose is washed with Saline or Aquamaris. After that, 1-2 drops are instilled into each nostril.
Since a 10% solution is rarely found in retail pharmacies, the doctor may prescribe 20% if the condition of the newborn allows.
In childhood
Instructions for children over 2 months old:
- babies under one year old are recommended to use a 10% solution of Sulfacyl sodium;
- from 2 months, 1-2 drops are prescribed four times a day, depending on the disease;
- the standard duration of treatment for blenorrhea is 7-10 days;
- purulent corneal pathologies are eliminated in 2 weeks or more;
- bacterial rhinitis is eliminated up to a week by instillation into the nose four times a day.
The frequency of instillation and the period of therapy are determined individually by the doctor.
Interaction with other drugs
Recommendations when using sulfacetamide with other drugs:
- It is categorically contraindicated to take sulfacetamide with silver salts. There is a strong incompatibility of these 2 drugs in the form of a pronounced allergic reaction.
- The combined use of sulfacetamide with benzocaine, procaine and tetracaine can lead to a sharp decrease in the bacteriostatic effect.
- The same effect occurs when using this drug with dicaine, novocaine, anesthesin and direct anticoagulants.
- If sulfacetamide is taken with chloramphenicol, the side effect of the second drug may occur.
- When used with diphenin and PASK, the toxicity of the main drug increases.
- Furosemide and thiazide diuretics in combination with sodium sulfacetamide can provoke sodium imbalance and ocular hypersensitivity.
Storage conditions and periods
After opening, the bottle is stored for no more than 38 days. The reason for such a short period is the peculiarities of the chemical formula. Prolonged contact with oxygen leads to oxidation and loss of beneficial properties. Therefore, for the treatment of mild conjunctivitis or rhinitis, it is recommended to purchase 5 ml vials.
The shelf life of the packaged medicinal product is 2 years. After it has expired, it is strictly forbidden to drip the solution.
Sulfacyl sodium should be stored in a dark place protected from sunlight at a temperature of 8 to 20 degrees.
The procedure for dispensing from pharmacies
Sulfacyl sodium - eye drops, the price of which is roughly in pharmacies ranging from 22 to 64 rubles, does not have a maximum price level. This is established only for vital drugs.
The final cost depends on:
- demand;
- release forms;
- therapeutic equivalence;
- material and time costs in development, research and production;
- the cost of the main active substance;
- strategy for the development and implementation of the product;
- logistics (distance and frequency of deliveries);
- pharmacy trade markup;
- availability of a patent for a medicinal product;
- exchange rate in case of sale of a foreign drug;
- the presence of marking due to the high cost of equipment (will become mandatory from July 1, 2020);
- originality of the product - reproduced much cheaper due to the absence of the need for verification of identity to the original drug, and, as a result, lower material costs.
The drug is dispensed without a prescription, so it can be purchased both at a retail point of sale and in an online store. When buying, be sure to study the expiration date and check the integrity of the packaging.
The drug Sulfacetamide is completely sterile due to the tightness of the lid, correct manufacture of the product, compliance with the rules for bottling and sealed packaging.
The drug Sulfacyl sodium is prescribed for all age categories. These eye drops are used both for ophthalmic diseases and for bacterial rhinitis. It is sold at a price of up to 64 rubles, but it is not legally established.
Before use, the drops should be warmed up in the palms of your hands. When instilling, do not touch the eyes with the bottle.
