What day should I take FSH and LH?

click fraud protection

One of the important hypophyseal gonadotropic hormones is FSH, a follicle-stimulating hormone. Another name for it is follitropin. Like all gonadotropins, FSH has an effect on the functioning of the gonads. The FSH assay can be administered to both women and men, and you need to know some rules so that the test results are reliable.

What is FSD

Pituitary Hormones

Follicle-stimulating hormone is produced in the anterior pituitary gland. The level of this gonadotropin depends on how well the gonads of both men and women function. In some cases, the doctor may prescribe an assay for the content of FSH in the blood. You can take tests for appointments made by:

  • gynecologist,
  • endocrinologist,
  • andrologist,
  • pediatrician,
  • and other specialists.

Follicle-stimulating hormone( FSH), like luteinizing hormone( LH), is secreted by the pituitary gland and, together with LH, is produced in the anterior pituitary gland and is associated with the concentration of sex hormones in the body.

To describe everything correctly and accessible - the simplified picture is as follows. FSH is released into the body several times a day - once in 1-4 hours, the process of secretion takes about 15 minutes - and exactly the time when the level of follicle-stimulating hormone overlaps the average rate by a factor of 1.5 or more, a maximum of 2.5 times. At the same time, the concentration of FSH in the blood is regulated by sex hormones: when a high content of these hormones is observed, the signal to the pituitary is slightly "slowed down" the secretion of follitropin, and when low, on the contrary, stimulates the release of FSH into the blood.

In addition, both in the female and in the male body, so-called inhibin B is produced( it is produced in women in the ovaries, and men in the testicles), it also suppresses the production of FSH.

Newborn

In children, the follicle-stimulating hormone is produced according to its scheme: it is increased in newborns for a while, followed by a sharp decrease in the level of this hormone, and in boys this occurs earlier than in girls, in half a year, when the representatives of the weaker sex observe this, starting withof the year. The next increase in FSH will be at the beginning of puberty, before the formation of secondary sexual characteristics.

The purpose of FSH in the female body can be seen already from the name of the hormone: it stimulates the ripening of the follicles, and simultaneously prepares them for the fact that they will be further affected by luteinizing hormone( LH).In women of reproductive age, each menstrual cycle is the follicular and luteal phase. Initially, under the influence of FSH, the follicle ripens, then FSH and LH together contribute to the fact that the woman's ovulation occurs. During the luteal phase, LH produces progesterone.

At the onset of menopause, levels of FSH and LH in the blood increase, as the function of the ovaries fades.

In the male body, the level of follitropin upon reaching a man of puberty is a constant value. FSH affects the sexual function of men, its concentration depends on the level of testosterone, as well as the number of viable spermatozoa - that is, directly reproductive function of a person.

How to properly pass the

test For this, venous blood is given. To properly donate blood for this analysis, you need to comply with several rules that relate to:

  • power;
  • drug therapy( if applicable);
  • physical and psycho-emotional state of a person who will donate blood for analysis;
  • of bad habits;
  • blood collection time( the patient and the doctor determine the date and time, when to take the analysis, depending on the condition of the person, its circumstances and not least the biorhythms, and in women - also the cycle of menstruation).

Blood test

For FSH analysis, you do not need to go hungry all day before you donate blood, but three hours before this procedure you need to forget about any food: you can only drink water, best non-carbonated.

If the patient is taking any hormonal medications, they should be stopped two days before the test is taken. This applies primarily to steroids and thyroid.

You can not expose yourself to great physical exertion, as well as unnecessary worries: the right analysis is handed down by people who, during the day before, did not overexert themselves and were not worried.

If the analysis needs to be given to a smoker, then he needs to forget about his bad habit three hours before taking blood.

When to do an analysis on FSH

The analysis results first of all give an opportunity to find out the cause of hormonal disorders. What can it be? If we talk about the level of violations, it can be:

  • primary,
  • secondary.

The primary level of impairment depends directly on the dysfunction of the sex glands. The cause of secondary disorders is dysfunction of the hypothalamus and pituitary gland. For example, dysfunction of testicles in men and ovaries in women, along with a low level of FSH indicates abnormalities in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. And the increased indicators in the analysis are a consequence of violations in the function of the sex glands.

Blood test

The deviations from the normal level of LH also depend on the level of disturbances.

If the analysis on follitropin is given by women, it is possible to correctly determine the concentration only taking into account the peculiarities of its menstrual cycle.

Normal indications of follicle-stimulating hormone in women in reproductive age depend on the phase and day of the menstrual cycle, they can be correctly determined as follows:

  • 3,5 - 12,5 - in the menstrual and follicular phase of the cycle( from 1 to 6-1 andfrom the 3rd to the 14th day respectively);
  • 4.7 - 21.5 - in the ovulatory phase of the cycle( from the 13th to the 15th day);
  • 1,7 - 7,7 - in the luteal phase of the cycle( on the day of the onset of menstruation, that is, on the 15th day of the cycle).
  • Before the menopause and in the postmenopausal period, the FSH value ranges from 25.8 to 134.8.

Analysis can be given simultaneously and on LH - it concerns those cases when it is necessary to diagnose infertility( both female and male).Depending on the indications of the level of follitropin and LH, the attending physician can draw up a scheme and methods of treatment.

Reasons for testing

Analyzes for the concentration of follitropin can be given:

  • together with LH and other sex hormones - when it is necessary to determine infertility and its causes;
  • for diagnosis of menopause or phase of the cycle;
  • when men have decreased sperm production;
  • if it is determined which level of sexual function disorders is present, primary or secondary;
  • when there is a need to correctly diagnose the pathology of puberty( too early or later);
  • in order to test what effect hormone therapy has, whether the treatment is properly performed, and thus to monitor its effectiveness
  • and so on.

Child

Children can also take such tests when there is a suspicion that their development is proceeding correctly:

  • if there are cycle disorders or if the cycle does not start at all;
  • if there is any disruption in growth( dwarfism or excessive growth, acromegaly, etc.);
  • if there are suspicions of congenital genetic diseases.

Reasons for data to be unreliable

What factors can influence the doctor to consider the results of the tests as unreliable and subject to re-examination?

This can be any of the items listed above - that is, when a person before handing over an analysis violates any of the listed rules.

In addition, the doctor should explain to the patient which drugs other than hormonal drugs can still affect the result, and which diagnostic or treatment procedures reduce the accuracy of the findings( eg, MRI).
