Amoxiclav is an antibiotic based on amoxicillin, which is produced by companies in Austria and Slovenia in the form of tablets, as well as powder (for preparing a solution for injection and for preparing a syrup for oral administration). Clavulanic acid, included in the composition, expands the antibacterial spectrum of action and makes it possible to use the drug for the treatment of children.

Composition and form of release

Amoxiclav syrup is sold in the pharmacy in the form of a powder, from which a suspension is made. The product is represented by small white granules (the presence of a yellow tint is possible). The powder is found in jars of brown transparent glass with a volume of 35 to 140 ml. The amount of the drug in the jar can be from 8.75 to 35 g.

Pharmacological properties

Amoxiclav - syrup for children is included in the list of antibacterial medicines.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Amoxicillin, which is part of the suspension, has a destructive effect on the walls of pathogenic microflora, as a result, the bacteria begin to die. And clavulanic acid expands and enhances the antibacterial properties of the first component due to the fact that it protects amoxicillin from the destructive action of bacteria.Amoxiclav syrup for children. Dosage, instructions for use

The drug begins to act approximately 1 hour after its administration and is excreted from the body after 6-24 hours (the withdrawal time depends on the concentration of the active elements in the suspension).

Indications for use for children

Amoxiclav is a syrup for children that pediatricians use for the following diseases:

  • otitis media (inflammation of the ear tissues);
  • tonsillitis (inflammation of the tonsils in a chronic form);
  • sinusitis (inflammation of the paranasal sinuses of an infectious nature);
  • the development of a purulent process in the pharyngeal space;
  • sore throat of a purulent nature;
  • inflammation of the bronchi, bronchioles and other lung tissues caused by bacteria;
  • detection of infection in the genitourinary system;
  • bacterial damage to the epidermis, as well as soft tissues;
  • bone diseases of an infectious nature;
  • the presence of bacteria in the cardiovascular system;
  • diagnosis of infection in the organs of the digestive tract.

The drug can be used only if laboratory tests have confirmed its effectiveness against the identified infection.

Contraindications

Suspension Amoxiclav is prohibited for use in pediatrics in the following cases:

  • allergies and increased susceptibility to the composition of the powder;
  • Infectious mononucleosis. The cause of the development of the disease (which is very severe) is a virus. Taking an antibiotic will only provoke an exacerbation of the disease;
  • violation of liver / kidney tissue or organ activity in a neglected form;
  • blood cancer.

In case of kidney diseases, the drug can be used with the permission of a doctor, while the dose and course of therapy are set by the pediatrician on an individual basis. There are no age restrictions for the appointment of Amoxiclav suspension (it is allowed to use an antibiotic from the first days of life).

Method of administration and dosage

For children (under 12 years old), the drug is suitable only in the form of a suspension. Before you start familiarizing yourself with the dosing of syrup and the rules for taking it, it is important to familiarize yourself with the intricacies of preparing the Amoxiclav solution.Amoxiclav syrup for children. Dosage, instructions for use

Features of the preparation of the suspension:

  1. First, shake well the dry contents of the bottle, as the powder can clump and be more difficult to dilute with water.
  2. Open a bottle and pour water into it. The amount of the finished syrup must be up to the risks indicated on the bottle (the volume of water is also indicated in the instructions). In this case, you must first pour in about half of the required amount of water, shake the contents. Then add the rest of the water and shake up the suspension again.
  3. Shake the syrup every time before dosing.
  4. Measure the required amount of suspension into the syringe.
  5. After use, rinse the syringe and close the bottle tightly.

The suspension should be prepared before starting treatment, it is forbidden in advance, since the shelf life of the syrup (it is indicated below) is quite short. In addition, it must be borne in mind that the agent should be consumed with food to reduce the likelihood of side effects. Food does not affect the effectiveness of the antibiotic.

The daily and single dosage of the suspension depends on the concentration of active substances in the syrup, the weight of the child, and the severity of the disease. Below is a table of antibiotic use with indicative data.

Features of dosing syrup (with a dosage of amoxicillin 125 and 250 mg), taking into account the listed characteristics:

Patient weight in kg Pathologies with mild to moderate severity

The dosage given in the table must be divided into 3 doses.Amoxiclav syrup for children. Dosage, instructions for useAmoxiclav syrup for children. Dosage, instructions for useAmoxiclav syrup for children. Dosage, instructions for use

The dosage of the suspension (when using a syrup with a concentration of amoxicillin 125 and 250 mg) can be calculated independently, knowing the weight of the child and the form of the severity of the course diseases according to the following formulas:

  • children under 3 months - 30 mg (the amount of amoxicillin in suspension is taken into account) * 1 kg of the child's weight;
  • children over 3 months old - 20-25 mg * 1 kg of weight;
  • in severe forms of the disease - 40-45 mg * 1 kg of the child's body weight.

The resulting dosage should be divided into 2 doses (for infants up to 3 months) and 3 times for children over 3 months). That is, the syrup must be taken every 12 or 8 hours.

Suspension dosing rules when choosing Amoxicillin with a dosage of 400 mg amoxicillin:

Child's weight in kg Average severity of the disease The disease is severe
5-10 2.5 ml 5 ml
10-15 5 ml 7.5 ml
15-20 7.5 ml 10 ml
20-30 10 ml 15 ml
30-40 15 ml 20 ml

The dose indicated in the table should be divided by 2 times.Amoxiclav syrup for children. Dosage, instructions for use

When self-calculating the dosage of the medication for children over 3 months old, 25-45 mg is needed (the calculation uses the concentration of amoxicillin in the syrup) * 1 kg of the child's weight. The amount of amoxicillin depends on the severity of the disease. Divide the received dose into 2 doses.

The course of treatment lasts at least 5 days and no more than 14 days. You should take the course to the end (even if the child's condition has stabilized), otherwise an incompletely eradicated infection can quickly "return" the disease.

Side effects

Suspension Amoxiclav is considered a relatively safe antibiotic.

But despite this, the use of the drug may be accompanied by the following adverse reactions:

  • decreased appetite, which is provoked by nausea;
  • discomfort and soreness in the abdomen;
  • development or exacerbation of gastritis (inflammation or change in the state of tissues in the stomach);
  • occasional vomiting;
  • diarrhea. Constipation may also develop;
  • yellowness of the skin and pupils due to deterioration in the functioning of the liver;
  • the development of a fungal infection in the mouth or vagina (thrush);
  • inflammation of the tissues of the tongue;
  • violation of hematopoiesis;
  • the appearance of seizures;
  • discoloration of tooth enamel (becomes darker);
  • deterioration in sleep and the process of falling asleep;
  • headache;
  • changes in the work and condition of the kidneys;
  • the appearance of salts and blood in the urine;
  • the development of an infection in the intestine. Pathology is manifested by bloody diarrhea and severe weakness as a result of severe poisoning of the body with toxins;
  • inflammation of tissues in the small and large intestine;
  • prolongation of blood clotting time;
  • hyperactivity and increased nervous excitement;
  • causeless anxiety and pronounced change in behavior in the child;
  • a decrease in the concentration of platelets, hemoglobin or leukocytes in the blood;
  • development or exacerbation of dermatological diseases;
  • in extremely rare cases, the development of thrombosis was noted.Amoxiclav syrup for children. Dosage, instructions for use

The drug can also provoke the appearance of allergies, which is more often expressed by suffocation, a rash, itchy skin.

It is important that the higher the prescribed dosage, the longer the course of admission, and also if the patient has kidney pathologies, then the likelihood of side effects increases.

Overdose

Taking a suspension one-time in a large dosage or with an independent extension of the course of therapy, the development of an overdose of medication occurs.

Poisoning with Amoxiclav is manifested by the following symptoms:

  • frequent and profuse vomiting, accompanied by diarrhea. These symptoms are dangerous due to the rapid development of dehydration;
  • severe dizziness, possible loss of balance;
  • pronounced aggression and overexcitement;
  • lack of sleep;
  • severe cramping pain in the abdomen;
  • severe violation of the state of tissues and the work of the kidneys, as well as the liver. The likelihood of damage to the second organ is higher than the first;
  • when taking the drug in a very large dose, it can provoke the appearance of severe seizures.

If no more than 4 hours have passed after the poisoning, then the child should rinse the stomach and give the sorbent to drink. In addition, it is necessary to take rehydrating drugs. If more time has passed after the poisoning or the child's condition worsens, then hardware purification of the blood from the antibiotic is necessary, which is performed permanently.

special instructions

Amoxiclav - syrup for children should be used after studying all the intricacies of its reception, which include:

  • before using the antibiotic, it is required to completely exclude pathologies of the kidneys, hematopoiesis and liver in the child;
  • patients with moderate and mild kidney pathologies need to select an individual dosage, and the frequency of syrup consumption per day also changes;
  • before completing the course, the presence of a viral or fungal infection in the body should be excluded, since taking an antibiotic will provoke a decrease in immunity, as a result, the infection will begin to progress;
  • the suspension disrupts the state of the microflora in the intestine, therefore, for the period of the course and after its end (approximately for 14 days), probiotics must be taken;
  • if a small portion of urine is secreted per day in a child, then there is a high probability of the appearance of salts in the urine;
  • drink the suspension during the meal. As a result, the likelihood of developing an adverse reaction will decrease, and the agent will also irritate the digestive tract less;
  • if the patient is prescribed a large dosage of syrup, then it is necessary to increase the amount of water drunk per day;
  • the suspension is required to be taken for another 2-3 days, after the patient's well-being is normalized;
  • the suspension must not be prepared in advance, and the bottle should be shaken thoroughly before use.

Signs of allergy to taking Amoxiclav can manifest itself in a severe form, therefore, before taking the drug, you should make sure that the child is not allergic to the composition of the powder.

Drug interactions

If the child was prescribed other medications before using the suspension, then it is necessary to find out from the doctor the possibility of taking them together with Amoxiclav.

The drug should not be taken with the following drugs:

  • drugs that lower intestinal motility, increase the likelihood of side effects from taking syrup;
  • drugs that thin the blood, provoke the development of nose or internal bleeding;
  • medicines with a laxative effect, as well as sorbents, reduce the therapeutic effect of the suspension;
  • ascorbic acid accelerates the absorption of the antibiotic, as a result, dose adjustment is required;
  • diuretics increase the concentration of the antibiotic in the blood;
  • syrup increases the toxicity of methotrexate (immunosuppressant);
  • gout medications increase the amount of antibiotic in the blood;
  • alcohol-containing medicinal solutions increase the load on the liver;
  • the antibiotic reduces the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.

Amoxiclav cannot be combined with other antibiotics, as the severity of side effects from both drugs increases.

After preparing the suspension, the agent must be placed in a cool place with a temperature of 2 to 7 degrees and stored for no longer than 1 week. In both cases, the bottle with the contents should be tightly closed, in a dark place, and children should not have access to it.

Amoxiclav is popular in pediatrics, as it is easy to dose and use, in addition, the drug can be used to treat children from birth. The disadvantages of the drug include the short shelf life of the finished suspension, as well as the need to find the syrup in a cool place.
