chanted speech The term "chanting", though not frequently used, is nevertheless fairly well known in the Russian language, and probably there are not so many people who would not know its meaning. Under it usually mean the distinct, loud and measured utterance of individual words, phrases or texts: poems, slogans, demands, etc.

However, few know that in neurology, there are conditions in which a person's speech becomes scandalous beyond his will.

Thus, the cerebellar dysarthria is characterized by chanted speech and arises from the discoordination of speech processes. This type of dysarthria is not associated with paresis, namely, with a violation of the coordination of the muscles of the motor-breathing apparatus, as a result of which an intentional tremor of the tongue arises and speech becomes difficult, "jerky".

There is a clear division of words into syllables with a pause between them - at the same time, voice modulation and scanned intonation do not correspond to the meaning of the spoken speech. Another characteristic feature: rhythmic exposure of stresses at regular intervals( sometimes stresses can be placed on each syllable).

Reasons for scanding

The appearance of this disorder is usually associated with a lesion of the cerebellum or associated connective nerve fibers located in the brainstem.

The most frequently chanted speech as a symptom occurs in multiple sclerosis, being one of three( along with intentional tremor and nystagmus) of the most characteristic signs of the disease( the so-called triad of Charcot).

Among other diseases in which this speech disorder can be noted: various forms of encephalomyelitis, tumors and other voluminous formations of the cerebellar hemispheres, rarely - cerebellar strokes. It should be noted that some diseases with the development of this syndrome can occur, including in children.

Symptoms Combined with Scandicated Speech

In the neurological symptomatology of diseases, chanted speech is not an isolated symptom and is combined with a number of other Child pathological manifestations. Two of them - intentional tremor and nystagmus - together with the chants forming the famous triad of Charcot, have already been mentioned above.

Following in frequency - the disappearance of abdominal reflexes and temporal pallor of the optic discs - together with the three mentioned are included in the so-called pentad Marburga.

To frequent concomitant symptoms also include ataxia, pelvic disorders, increased muscle tone, paresis( often in the lower limbs).

In addition, chanting can be combined with dizziness, all kinds of visual disturbances, pathologies of other cranial nerves( except for the visual), and sensitive disorders.

Less common with such symptoms as convulsions, headache, autonomic disorders, mental disorders, various pain syndromes, sleep abnormalities.

pentada Marburga

As can be seen from the foregoing, the chanted speech itself is not a symptom sufficient for a neurological diagnosis.

It should also be noted that the suspicion of the presence of this symptom is not a reason to unequivocally judge the patient in general of any pathology. Features articulation and diction of some people can create the illusion of having a chant recitative.

After all, the nature of the pronunciation of sounds and words is determined not only by the regulation of the nervous system, but also by the condition of the speech-motor organs themselves, as well as by the emotional state of the person, etc. Therefore, only a comprehensive examination, taking into account neurologic and other symptoms, can serve as a sufficient basis for a medical opinion in each case.
