Taufon comes in the form of eye drops. When applied topically, it is used as a metabolic agent. The main function of the drug is to regenerate the tissues of the eye. There are more effective analogues on the pharmaceutical market. The drug is used for cataracts of any etiology, dystrophic changes in the cornea and its injuries.

Domestic and imported analogues of the product

Taufon (more effective analogs are used based on the decision of the attending physician) is not the only representative of metabolic agents used in ophthalmology. This drug has several analogues.

They can be divided into 2 main groups:

  • Structural analogs. These are drugs that have the same active ingredient, spectrum of action and scope of application as the original drug.
  • Functional analogs. These are drugs that have a similar effect to Taufon. But they achieve it with the help of other active ingredients and do not contain taurine in their composition.

Structural analogs include:

  • Taurine.
  • Oftofon-taurine.

Functional analogues include:

  • Oftan Katahrom.
  • Dibikor.
  • Fotil.
  • Pilocarpine.
  • Betoptic.

Structural analogs, like Taufon, contain taurine as an active component in an amount of 40 mg per 1 ml of the finished solution. For this reason, they have the same mechanism of action.

Turin is a natural metabolic product of amino acids that include a sulfur atom:

  • cysteine;
  • methionine;
  • cysteamine.

Due to this, taurine acts on the organs of vision as follows:

  • restores the cell membrane;
  • improves phospholipid composition;
  • restores the exchange of calcium and potassium;
  • normalizes the conduction of a nerve impulse;
  • promotes healing and restoration of the functions of the affected tissues of the eye.

Taufon includes auxiliary components:

  • methylhydroxybenzoate, which acts as a preservative;
  • sodium hydroxide solution 1 M is used to regulate the pH of the medium;
  • water for injection is added as a solvent.

In preparations Taurine and Ortofon-taurine sodium hydroxide is not contained. This compound is desirably included in ophthalmic dosage forms. This ensures the stability of the finished product, maintains the level of acid-base balance within the required range (3.5-8.5). The presence of sodium hydroxide in the composition increases the therapeutic effect of the drug, reducing the risk of unwanted side reactions. For this reason, it is better to give preference to the original drug Taufon.

Taufon and structural analogs, in addition to the list of auxiliary components, differ from each other by the manufacturer. It is difficult to say which of the drugs is more effective. Any replacements should only be made with the agreement of a doctor. Priority should be given to the remedy prescribed by a specialist.

Since the funds are produced in different factories, their cost may differ. However, all three drugs are in the same price range.

If we talk about the structural analogs of the drug, then there are many differences between them and Taufon, because they all have different active ingredients. Hence the various mechanisms of action, lists of indications, contraindications and possible side effects.

Oftan Katahrom

Finnish-made eye drops are drugs that stimulate regenerative processes. The product is available in the form of a transparent red solution. Its main function is to improve the energy metabolism of the lens.Taufon and analogues are more effective. Price

As active ingredients, Oftan Katakhrom contains:

  • Cytochrome C. It takes part in oxidation and reduction reactions and is a powerful antioxidant.
  • Adenosine. Participates in the synthesis of ATP, an important metabolic factor in the tissues of the eyeball.
  • Nicotinamide stimulates the formation of nicotinamide dinucleotide, promotes the regeneration of damaged cells.

Together, these components represent an effective remedy for the treatment of cataracts of any etiology. However, this is where the list of indications for the use of the drug Oftan Katakhrom ends.

Unlike Taufon, the drug is not indicated for the treatment of diseases:

  • retinal degeneration;
  • corneal trauma;
  • open-angle glaucoma.

If the patient suffers from one of the listed diseases, Oftan Katakhrom is not recommended for him. Preference should be given to other more effective means in this case.

The manufacturer's instructions for storage are also different. Taurine can be stored at room temperatures up to + 25 ° C. Packaging with Oftan Katakhrom drops is thermolabile and until use is stored in a dark place with a temperature range of +8 to +15 ° C. This is not always convenient for people leading an active social lifestyle, given the dosage regimen of the drug, 1-2 drops 3 times a day. That is, it is necessary to apply drops during working hours.

If we talk separately about the treatment of cataracts, in most cases ophthalmologists prefer Oftan Katakhrom drops than Taufon. This is due to the unique composition of the Finnish product. The specialist makes the choice in favor of one or another remedy for cataract depending on the diagnosis, stage of the disease and the physiological characteristics of the patient.

Dibikor

The drug is a metabolic agent containing Taurine. However, there is a significant difference between this drug and Taufon. It consists in the concentration of the active component and the form of release. Taufon is a 4% sterile solution for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases.

Dibikor is available in tablet form and has 2 main dosages:

  • 250 mg;Taufon and analogues are more effective. Price
  • 500 mg.

That is, Dibikor is a product for internal use and cannot be used topically.

This concentration of taurine when used internally is used for completely different purposes:

  • type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus;
  • cardiovascular insufficiency;
  • poisoning with cardiac glycosides;
  • protection of liver cells in patients forced to take systemic antifungal drugs for a long time.

Fotil

Taufon (analogs that are more effective are widely represented on the pharmaceutical market) as one of the possible replacements has Fotil, which is produced in Finland.

The tool belongs to antiglaucoma drugs and has 2 active components:

  • Timolol. Reduces pressure inside the eyeball by reducing the production of watery components.
  • Pilocarpine contracts the intraocular muscles, relieves tension inside the eye, reducing pressure and widening the viewing angles of the anterior chamber of the eye.

Since Fotil has a different composition, the mechanism of action is also different from that of Taufon.

Therefore, Fotil is prescribed for diseases such as:

  • open-angle and closed-angle glaucoma;
  • secondary glaucoma;
  • after surgical interventions.

Taufon and analogues are more effective. PriceContraindications include:

  • acute and chronic heart failure;
  • bradycardia;
  • a history of bronchial asthma;
  • chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,
  • allergy to the drug;
  • age under 18.

With extreme caution, Fotil can be used in patients with:

  • diabetes;
  • hypoklycemia;
  • thyrotoxicosis;
  • detachment of the retina.

Taufon has one absolute contraindication. The drug is prohibited for use by patients under the age of 18. Thus, it is far from always appropriate to replace Taufon with Fotil. This indicates a safer composition of Taufon compared to the Finnish counterpart.

Fotil should be used when making an accurate diagnosis of glaucoma. In case of eye injuries, dystrophic changes, preference should be given to Taufon.

In addition, Fotil belongs to prescription drugs, it is stored at a temperature of + 2-8 ° C. Taufon is commercially available and can be stored at room temperature.

Pilocarpine

Taufon (more effective analogs belong to different groups and have different properties) is a metabolic agent (that is, it improves the metabolic process in the tissues of the body). The drug Pilocarpine does not possess such properties. Pilocarpine is available as a sterile 1% clear solution.

The active substance is represented by the compound pilocarpine hydrochloride, which has a number of properties:

  • decreased pressure inside the eye;
  • contraction of the muscles of the iris and ciliary muscle;
  • ensuring the outflow of excess fluid from the eye tissues;
  • widening the viewing angles of the anterior chamber.

Therefore, Pilocarpine eye drops are used for glaucoma of any etiology and severity. Also, the tool can be used in ophthalmology, when there is a need for a narrowing of the pupil.

Taufon and analogues are more effective. Price
Pilocarpine - analogue of Taufon

Even when used as a topical preparation, it can create a risk of side reactions:

  • headache;
  • decreased vision;
  • dermatitis of the eyelids;
  • cataract;
  • slowing down the heart rate.

Taufon has a more modest list of side effects. It includes only an allergic reaction in the form of itching, burning and redness of the mucous membrane of the eyes.

In addition, pilocarpine is categorically contraindicated in violation of the integrity of the eye tissue. Therefore, in case of eye injuries, it is forbidden to replace Taufon with Pilocarpine. This can lead to a deterioration in the patient's condition.

Pilocarpine is a prescription drug, therefore it cannot be dispensed in the pharmacy network for independent use.

Betoptic

The Swiss drug contains betaxolol hydrochloride. The compound is a selective beta1-blocker, reduces intraocular pressure, does not have a local anesthetic effect.

The main distinguishing features of Betoptic from previous antiglaucoma drugs are that:

  • does not reduce blood flow along the optic nerve;
  • does not cause spasm of accommodation;Taufon and analogues are more effective. Price
  • does not create a veil or film effect in front of the eyes;
  • can be used in patients with chronic lung diseases;
  • not applicable for angle-closure glaucoma.

Indications for Betoptic's use:

  • Open-angle glaucoma.
  • Ocular hypertension.

The main difference between this drug and Taufon is that the action of Betoptic is antiglaucoma. While Taufon refers to metabolic agents. Therefore, if the patient suffers from eye trauma, cataracts or corneal dystrophy, Betoptic is not suitable for replacing Taufon. For these diseases, taurine-based products are preferred.

Prices

Taufon (more effective analogs differ among themselves not only in composition, mechanism of action and list of indications), like all its substitutes, have their own cost:

Name Price
Taufon 4% 10 ml RUB 110-160
Oftan Katahrom 10 ml RUB 290-340
Dibikor 250 mg 60 tablets.

500 mg 60 tablets

RUB 240-290

RUB 330-380

Fotil 2% 5 ml

Fotil forte 4% 5 ml

RUB 150-200

RUB 210-260

Pilocarpine 1% 5 ml 40-90 rubles.
Betoptic 0.5% 5 ml

Betoptic C 0.25% 5 ml

RUB 340-390

RUB 310-360

The cost of the compared drugs is completely different. Without calculations, it is clear that the cheapest of them are Pilocarpine drops, and the most expensive will be Betoptic drops.

Taufon occupies the middle price category, its structural analogs (Taurine and Ortofon-taurine) will cost about 80-130 rubles. Among the products based on taurine, their purchase will be more profitable. However, given that the original Taufon contains a component that maintains the acid-base balance, it is wiser to pay about 40-50 rubles in addition. per packing. This will reduce the risk of developing unwanted adverse reactions.

Favorable cost should not be a priority when choosing a drug for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases for the following reasons:

  • Pilocarpine is not intended for the treatment of degenerative changes or eye injuries and is only relevant for the treatment of glaucoma.
  • The drug has a wide list of side effects and contraindications, so it is not suitable for all patients.
  • Pilocarpine eye drops can only be used if prescribed by the attending physician.

The antiglaucoma agent Fotil differs in that it has a combined composition. Due to this, its therapeutic effect is more pronounced, and the patient will not feel unpleasant symptoms of the disease for a long time. Fotil also cannot be used for traumatic eye injuries. While Taufon has a direct indication for the treatment of such a pathology. Fotil is available in the form of a 2% and 4% solution.

The higher the concentration of active ingredients, the higher the cost. The decision of which form of release to cure glaucoma remains with the ophthalmologist. Compared to Pilocarpine drops, this agent has a more pronounced effect and a lower risk of side effects. Considering foreign production, we can conclude that Fotil drops are worth their money. But they can only be prescribed when the patient has an established diagnosis.

Betoptic eye drops have the highest cost of the offered products. Among all the antiglaucoma drugs presented, Swiss eye drops have several advantages described above. However, it should be recalled that Betoptic is not used for angle-closure glaucoma.

Eye drops Oftan Katahrom can only be used in the treatment of cataracts. The patient can use this remedy only when prescribed by an ophthalmologist. Self-administration of prescription drops is strictly prohibited. The cost of this remedy usually justifies the effect of cataract therapy.

The listed drops have a narrow spectrum of action and should be used for specific pathologies of the organs of vision. If the main purpose of using a drug is to maintain visual function, strengthen or heal eye tissues, preference should be given to drugs based on taurine.

There are several reasons for this:

  • the opportunity to get a remedy without a doctor's prescription;
  • a wide range of actions;
  • the minimum list of undesirable side reactions;
  • lack of strict contraindications, with the exception of individual intolerance.

Eye drops Taufon represent the best value for money. If the patient suffers from a specific disease (cataract, glaucoma), do not place high hopes on this drug. It is most reasonable to seek help from an ophthalmologist and undergo the required examination. When treating such diseases, doctors prescribe Taufon only as an auxiliary therapy. The main treatment is for narrowly targeted eye drops.

For example:

  • Oftan Katahrom should be used for cataracts;
  • Betoptic, Pilocarpine, Fotil can be prescribed for glaucoma.

Any independent use of pharmaceuticals should be carried out after consultation with a specialist.

Taufon is an effective metabolic agent for many eye pathologies. There are a number of analogues on the pharmaceutical market. They may be more effective in treating conditions such as cataracts or glaucoma. In other cases, taurine-based drops should be preferred.
