Lugol solution with glycerin

Lugol with glycerin, due to the presence of iodine, has a moderate local irritating, strong antiseptic and antifungal effect. A distinctive feature of the tool is that sensitive pathogens are not able to develop resistance to it.

Compound

The active ingredient in Lugol's composition is Iodine (iodine), present in an amount of no more than 1%, the rest of the volume is made up of additional substances. Molecular Iodine is dissolved in a small amount of purified water and diluted with a glycerin base.

Lugol's excipients:

  • glycerin (94% of the total mass) - softens the effect of iodine;
  • water (3%) - as a neutral solvent;
  • potassium iodide (2%) - improves the solubility of iodine.

Lugol (solution with glycerin) is active against most gram-negative, gram-positive pathogens and fungi. The drug is considered a universal antiseptic that is not addictive and rarely leads to side effects.

In what form is it produced

To date, a glycerin iodine preparation is produced in one pharmaceutical form - a liquid solution. The only difference is the way of packaging Lugol and the device for application. The glass bottle may come with a dropper dispenser or spray nozzle. The composition of the preparation for topical application and the spray are completely identical.

Lugol is packaged in bottles (25, 30, 50, 100 or 200 ml) with a tight stopper and a screw cap. The containers are placed in cardboard boxes with the mandatory enclosure of instructions. The spray preparation is provided with a spray nozzle. The price of Lugol's solution for local use (25 g bottle) varies from 30 to 94 rubles. The cost of the spray does not exceed 150 rubles.

Pharmacodynamics

Elemental iodine after entering the blood reveals its effect mainly in the thyroid gland. With a lack of iodine in the body and the environment, the substance from the drug is quickly absorbed and maintains the production of thyroid hormones, with sufficient concentration - blocks the sensitivity of the thyroid gland to TSH pituitary gland.Lugol solution with glycerin. Influence of Lugol, as an iodine preparation, on metabolism:

  • stimulates the process of decomposition of complex organic compounds into simple ones;
  • reduces the concentration of lipids and cholesterol in the blood;
  • accelerates the dissolution of blood clots;
  • slows down blood clotting.

Excreted through the excretory glands, iodine enhances their secretion, exerting an expectorant effect, increasing salivation. At small doses it stimulates lactation, at large doses it inhibits.

The external action of Lugol is due to the ability of iodine to destroy pathogenic microorganisms: gram-positive, gram-negative bacteria, fungi (including candida), yeast, with prolonged use - staphylococci.

The drug does not work on Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Iodine is also irritating and, when applied to large areas, is absorbed into tissues and absorbed into the bloodstream (resorptive effect).

Pharmacokinetics

When Lugol comes into contact with the body, elemental iodine is partially absorbed, carried through the body with the bloodstream, but is accumulated mainly by the thyroid gland. Excretion occurs through the skin with sweat, through the intestines or kidneys. A small proportion of iodides are found in breast milk.

Spraying Lugol on the mucous membranes of the throat, nose, skin is safe in correctly calculated doses. The drug is low-toxic, its resorption with local and external application is negligible. High absorption is noted when the solution is swallowed.

Application

When applied externally, Lugol is applied only to inflamed areas or areas affected by infection. In surgical practice, gauze napkins are impregnated with a solution to be applied to wounds or burns up to 3 times a day.

Topical application includes spraying, instillation, rinsing of the mouth, pharynx, ear and nasal passages. Internal administration is dosed individually as prescribed by the attending physician in accordance with the disease and age.

After applying Lugol to the mucous membranes of the oropharynx, do not drink or eat for at least 30 minutes. The drug must remain on the treated surface for a therapeutic effect. For external treatment, the solution is left on the skin for up to 15 minutes, after which a bandage is applied or the surface is left open.

For children under 18

Lugol (a solution with glycerin) is considered a gentle antiseptic, therefore, local application to mucous membranes and skin is used in pediatrics almost from birth. Internal admission is allowed only under strict indications for children over 5 years of age. The first application is carried out in a minimum amount, tracking the child's individual reaction to iodine.Lugol solution with glycerin. Instructions for use, price, reviews

Long-term use for patients of all ages has proven the effectiveness and safety of the product. Lugol is not addictive, microorganisms do not develop resistance to it, so the agent can used for therapy for all types of infections and does not show adverse reactions characteristic of antibiotics.

Most often, Lugol is prescribed for children with pharyngitis or sore throat for mechanical cleaning of the tonsils and throat treatment. The medicine in the form of a spray is irrigated with inflamed areas several times a day, or the lacunae are washed once a day. For the treatment of children under 3 years old, it is more advisable to apply Lugol with a special brush, spatula or cotton swab, since the spray can enter the bronchi when inhaling.

To exclude a mucosal burn, which sometimes occurs in children when treated with Lugol, for patients under 4 years of age, the drug is recommended to be diluted with saline twice. Such a solution is approved for use for gargling in older children.

For adults

Local use of Lugol for adults involves the following procedures:

  • washing lacunae for tonsillitis - daily for up to 5 days at intervals of 2 days;
  • spraying the throat for inflammations and infections - up to 6 times a day until the condition is relieved;
  • irrigation of the nasopharynx - 3 times a week for 2-3 months;
  • instillation of ears - a few drops per day for no more than 4 weeks in a row.Lugol solution with glycerin. Instructions for use, price, reviews

External treatment of wounds, ulcers, infected burns, erysipelas is carried out on the recommendation of a doctor, depending on the extent of the lesion. Small damages can be sprayed or lubricated up to 6 times a day. Large areas are processed 2-3 times a day. Lotions on wounds are changed as needed.

For pregnant

Among the official contraindications to the use of Lugol, pregnancy is indicated at any time and during lactation. In practice, the doctor may allow local or external use of the drug if other types of therapy are more dangerous for the mother and fetus. Internal reception in these conditions is completely excluded.

For the elderly

Lugol solution with glycerin can be used according to indications in adulthood. In this case, all contraindications to the use of the drug, the presence of chronic kidney or liver damage, and the functioning of the thyroid gland must be taken into account. Age-related changes in themselves are not grounds for canceling iodine-containing drugs, but their dosage should be very careful.

Contraindications

Do not appoint Lugol with a known sensitivity to iodine and hyperfunction of the thyroid gland.

In addition to pregnancy and infancy, there are such contraindications to the internal intake of the drug and abundant external application:

  • tuberculosis;
  • boils, acne;
  • thyrotoxicosis;
  • purulent skin lesions;
  • diathesis with a tendency to bleeding;
  • hives.Lugol solution with glycerin. Instructions for use, price, reviews

Lugol is prohibited for use in the presence of adenomas of any localization, decompensated liver or kidney pathologies, nephritis, nephrosis.

Overdose

Lugol, with prolonged use or a single dose in an increased dose, can provoke iodism.

The state of excessive accumulation of iodine in the body is accompanied by the following symptoms:

  • increased salivation;
  • constant thirst;
  • runny nose, cough;
  • itching, burning;
  • rash, dry skin;
  • metallic taste in the mouth;
  • swelling;
  • bronchospasm;
  • nausea, vomiting.

When such symptoms appear, sorbents should be drunk: potato starch, activated carbon. As an antidote, you can take soda diluted in water, milk, jelly. If you experience tachycardia, seizures, a drop in blood pressure, a threadlike pulse, you should immediately consult a doctor.

Side effects

When applied externally, undesirable side effects are extremely rare and are expressed by slight irritation at the site of application. Treating large areas of the body for a long time can lead to iodism.Lugol solution with glycerin. Instructions for use, price, reviews

Local application, especially the treatment of mucous membranes, can provoke more serious reactions: burning, swelling, up to Quincke's edema, fever, headache. Reactions to Lugol most often subside on their own or are stopped by antihistamines.

In patients over 45 years of age, the use of iodine-containing drugs (in particular, Lugol) may be accompanied by sleep disturbances, anxiety, increased sweating, salivation, and diarrhea.

Drug interactions

Lugol (solution with glycerin) is incompatible with compositions containing natural aromatic oils, white mercury, metal salts, ammonia. The agent weakens the effect of lithium preparations. The presence of blood, as well as pus or fat on the treated surfaces reduces the antiseptic effect of the solution. An acidic or alkaline environment adversely affects the work of the drug.

External application of Lugol at the same time as other disinfectants (for example, hydrogen peroxide) is not recommended, as this greatly dries up tissues and increases side effects. Especially carefully, you should alternate the solution with alcohol-containing agents.

Storage conditions and periods

Molecular iodine in the composition of the drug requires its storage in a cool, dark place, otherwise the substance is destroyed. The optimum temperature for storing "Lugol" is from +18 to +25 ° C. The shelf life with proper storage of the solution is 3 years.

The solution should be kept in its original packaging, tightening the cap tightly after each use. It is advisable to place vials with Lugol in a box and store in places where children or pets cannot get it.
